Rodger Kube, my pastor, recommended this book soon after he returned from Jamaica with our youth group. It is the story of Zechariah Pelsie of Charity Bay, Jamaica. The first lines of the book read this way: ”His name was Zechariah Pelsie. He was unspeakably ugly.” Birth had left its imprint on both his appearance and his soul. If there is a word to describe Zechariah’s personallity or nature, it is stubborn. He was of the mind that God did not listen to people sometimes because they bothered him all the time–shades of the little boy who cried Wolf. This view put him into a feud with the local parson , a U.S. educated, pompous man who nearly exploded when Pelsie told him he would get up and walk out of church whenever he heard something with which he did not agree, scowling of the remaining congrergation ont withdtanding. Also featured in this novel are Carina, Pelsie’s common law wife, and his two sons. And standing in contrast is a skeptical British doctor who diagnoses Pelsie with cancer. And even for this–cancer–Pelsie does not see fit to bother God. It is an extremely readable, thought-provoking book set in rural Jamaica with its point-of-view and style. I think this is one I will reread.

In his review of The Historical Figure of Jesus, Steve Soloman writes, “…the approach of this book is simply to uncover as much historical information about Jesus as possible….” That is a very important distinction to make as is his observation that if you are looking for a theological discussion, this is not the place to look. I am not a literalist at all (!); consequently, that is no problem for me. On the contrary, I find this very logical, detailed study illuminating. Instead of finding this historical view limiting, I find it provides me with an excellent foundation upon which to continue building my faith.

Sanders provides context in which to understand who Jesus was when he was living his human, earth-bound life. He provides us with facts–i.e. Jesus was probably born sometime between 7 and 4 BCE. Sanders not only provides such fact, he provides an accounting of where the facts come from and what supports them. He provides us with a theological context–what did a Jews believe at the time and how do we know that. He provides an understanding of what life was for those living at that time without screening it through our modern perceptions. He provides a political context including both the Jewish hierachy as well as the Roman political world. Looking at Jesus in these and other contexts has for me revealed a human Jesus who is more accessible than ever before.

Sanders’ look at miracles and at the resurrection are particular intriguing. Rather than trying to explain what natural phenomena might explain away the miracles or, using a negative approach, how nothing can disprove the miracles, he explores what comtemporaries of Jesus accepted about miracles and magic. His examination of the resurrection does the same–what did people believe about live after death, resurrection, resusitation, etc. Once again it is the context that is most helpful in gaining understanding. And clearly, it is easier to comprehend Jesus and his message in a modern context when you begin to understand the ancient context. In fact, I believe it is impossible to have the former without the latter.

This book, a Mother’s Day present, was a fascinating page turner. One reviewer called it “shocking, profoundly moving, and morally challenging, and I have to agree. It is the story of an eleven year old Jewish girl during WWII. It is once again a Holocaust novel. This time it relates the story of Sarah, a French Jew. Her parents are from Poland, I think, thus making them “foreign Jews” living in Paris.

A DVD I use at school before reading Elie Wiesel’s Night covers what is known as Vel d’Hiver, the rounding up of “foreign Jews” in Paris in 1942. They were transported to the Velodrome (bicycle racing dome)where eventually parents were separated from children. Nearly all died: some from starvation and disease, most from execution in the gas chambers in Auschwitz. The children were housed in horrible conditions in Paris and ultimately sent for execution. The following website provides a thorough account.

The key of the title fits the lock on a cupboard in which Sarah and her four year old brother would routinely hide. Everyone can relate to a secret hiding place like this. Nearly all children have one. (For my best friend and I, it was my closet where we went to hide and share secrets.) The hiding place in this story became much more important. When Sarah and her parents were rounded up, the four-year-old remained hidden in the cupboard, his big sister promising to return to retrieve him in just a few hours. Needless to say, the few hours turned out to be a much longer period of time. The structure of the novel is the alternating story of Sarah and her family with an omniscient narrator and of Julia, a modern day first person narrator. Of course, the two stories intersect. It is a fascinating, interesting read, even with a slightly flawed ending.

What a fascinating book! Copper Sun tells the story of Amari, a 15 year old African girl who witnesses the slaughter of her family and then undergoes unfathomable horrors as she suffers the Middle Passage on a slave ship to America. The descriptions of life onboard, or I should say below decks, are excruciating to read; one cannot even begin to imagine the reality that many slaves lived through. The book alternates Amari’s story (Myna to her white slave owner because “she is mine” ) with the story of Polly, an white indentured servant who must serve out the indenture of both her parents’ –14 years. As Polly says, by that time she will be an old woman (in her thirties!). The two girls are the property of the Derby family, a family whose business is growing rice. The use the girls cruelly as they do all their property. The two girls drew me into their story and made what I was aware of only intellectually seem much moe real.

I expected to like this book, and I did, but not as much as I expected. It is the story of a Texas plantation, slave-owning family who who failed to free their slaves until 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation amid fears of slave rebellion and rotting, neglected crops in the field. Two sisters and a brother dominate the story. The sisters, one owner and one owned, are raised together. The older brother, Gabe falls in love with the mulatto sister, Sis Goose, and then must return to there confederate army where he defends the frontier rather than fighting the Yankees. The war is over and Yankees come taking over the family home. It is an interesting read, and the history period and situation is fascinating. It is successful as a young adult novel, but I was hoping for more.

A slightly different take on the Holocaust, this is the story of one man who searches for his long, lost relatives seeking their fates during the horrors of World War II. It was a fascinating read because in many ways it reads as a detective story. And of course, the story is very personal to the author, Peter Mendelsohn. It kept my interest all the way through as I got to know the members of his family, living and dead, American and European. Mendelsohn takes the reader along as he travels the world–Ukraine, Australia, Israel and Scandinavia–searching for his Uncle Smiel, his wife and daughters. We learn so much in this fascinating read. We learn about the effect on the family survivors. We learn of the legacy of guilt or indifference in the non Jews in Europe.

Pretty common among teens, true. But for Bo this is a serious problem. He is living in a time with minor infractions of the rules can result in disproportionate prison sentences. Bo’s father is in jail for road rage. No one was hurt; he was just mad. Bo’s brother got 3 years for being drunk at a graduation party and for throwing a punch at a friend. Bo ends up in prison after the manipulations of a high school competitor, an athlete like Bo, when he puts the moves on Bo’s girl friend and beats Bo at his best track event. Then when that doesn’t work, his competitor makes it look like Bo has knowingly exposed everyone to a mysterious rash. That gets Bo banished to a work facility in the tundra of the north. There his challenges really begin.

This isn’t the best book I have read this year, but it was a fascinating read. What makes it most interesting is the view of a antiseptic futuristic society where keeping things clean and protected go to extremes. It is world where even an innocent little walk requires padding and a helmet to guarantee safety.

The Pianist by Wladyslaw Szpilman

Roman Polanski made a movie based on this book, and I used it in my English IV class after we had studied Night by Elie Wiesel. It was an incredibly stunning, gripping movie. I wondered if the same was true of the book. It was. This was one of those rare cases when I loved the movie adaptation as much as the book. If I see a movie and then read the book, I am always alert to new information absent from the movie. The book did not disappoint; I learned more. But it had the added dimension of creating a fascination for how Polanski and his script writers crafted the movie from the extremely well-crafted memoir. On the back of the book Washington Post Book World labels it “Historically indespensible,” and The Wall Street Journal calls it, “Stunning…Filled with unforgetable incidents, images, and people.”

This outstanding book follows the story of Szpilman who is a concern pianist in Warsaw, Poland. Surprisingly, written soon after WW II, Szpilman’s memoir is nearly void of bitterness. In it you learn of the fabulous, rich past of Warsaw. You learn of the horrors of life in the Warsaw Ghetto. You learn of the desperately dreadful, dire selection process that lead millions to their deaths in concentration camps, including Szpilman’s own family. You learn of war, the monstrous horror that elicits ultimate cruelty, kindness, bravery and cowardice. You learn of Szpilman’s journey to liberation. You learn of a German officer’s struggles with the inhumanity of his own nation and his part in the liberation of a handful of Jews, among them Wladyslaw Szpilman. It is nearly a cliche, but we must indeed remember the stories of the past and learn from them.

The Little book of Biblical Justiace by Chris Marshall

We Americans think we have a lock on what justice means. Afterall, we have our great system of checks and balances. We know all about lady justice and her scales. (Don’t get me started on politics and how the Supreme Court overstepped no, tromped over the line.) We know that our sense of justice comes from our forefathers and from our faith. Justice is a huge part of what underlies all the Religions of the Book–Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. But we fail to spend time studying what that justice should look like today. This little book does just that. It takes a look at what these concepts–just distribution of property and materials, equity of opportunity, rights or entitlements, the power of self-advocacy– meant to early people. It also calls us to see how justice might look today if God’s will were honored. It is a powerful little book that expands our view and calls for some kind of commitment to God’s justice from us all.

In Composition 110 we watched the movie Conspiracy about the Wanssee Conference where the Nazis formalized the Final Solution. A student who was particularly moved by all this brought this book to my attention. It is a memoir by a woman who at 8 years of age was taken from her comfortable home, moved to the Warsaw Ghetto, then to a concentration camp, and finally on a horrific death march. I have read lots about the Holocaust. I have periodically approached obsession with the subject. Since I learned of it, I have ever since been trying to come to grips with the inhumanity. I still cannot conceive of it. But this book has helped me come closer to grasping what at least one survivor experienced. An example of one event she narrates that will not leave my mind is this: She and her mother were, after already having endured the unimaginable, stripped of all their clothes and thrust into cold showers. Then, while others endured the same, the narrator and her mother along with hundreds of others were herded into a common area where they waited huddled together, nude and wet. Moreover, they were standing on ice in weather that measured several degrees below freezing. They knew they must move constantly or die. It is a macabre, absurd image to entertain in your mind; then you realize that real living, breathing human beings experienced this. I can never think of the cold in the same way. And even though many of the people who experienced this are dead–even the survivors–I am heart sick that people are capable of doing such things to their fellow man.

It is not hard to tell that this is a gripping book. I know that it is almost a cliche, but we must never forget.
